The Technical Side of Dubbing: Equipment and Software We Use

Behind every great dubbing project is a sophisticated technical infrastructure that enables the precision, quality, and efficiency needed for professional results. At Frame and Wave, we’ve invested in cutting-edge equipment and software that allows us to deliver world-class dubbing services.

Our Recording Studios

The foundation of our technical setup is our purpose-built recording studios. Each studio features:

  • Acoustically treated rooms designed specifically for voice recording
  • Floating floors and double-wall construction to eliminate external noise
  • Climate control systems that maintain optimal temperature while operating silently
  • Specialized lighting that doesn’t generate noise or interference

“The recording environment is crucial,” explains Romnie, our Audio Technician. “Even the most talented voice actor can’t deliver their best performance if they’re in a space with poor acoustics or distracting background noise.”

Microphones and Preamps

We use a selection of high-end microphones chosen specifically for voice recording, including:

  • Neumann U87 – Our workhorse microphone, renowned for its warm, detailed sound
  • Sennheiser MKH 416 – A directional shotgun microphone that excels at rejecting room noise
  • AKG C414 – Offering exceptional versatility for different voice types

These microphones are paired with top-tier preamps from brands like Avalon, Neve, and API, ensuring clean signal paths that capture every nuance of the performance.

Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs)

For recording and editing, we primarily use Pro Tools, the industry standard for professional audio production. Our setup includes:

  • Pro Tools Ultimate with HDX hardware for ultra-low latency monitoring
  • Specialized plugins for voice processing, including EQ, compression, and de-essing
  • iZotope RX Advanced for audio restoration and noise reduction

We also maintain workstations running Logic Pro and Reaper to accommodate different workflow preferences and project requirements.

Video Synchronization Tools

Precise synchronization between audio and video is essential for dubbing. Our technical setup includes:

  • VoiceQ software for real-time script and cue management
  • Custom-built video playback systems that allow frame-accurate cueing
  • Multiple monitor setups so voice actors can see both the video and their script simultaneously

“The technical challenge in dubbing is creating a seamless workflow where the voice actor can focus entirely on their performance,” says Romnie. “Our systems are designed to make the technical aspects invisible, allowing for a natural, creative process.”

Remote Recording Capabilities

While we prefer recording in our studios for optimal quality, we’ve also developed robust remote recording capabilities, including:

  • Source-Connect for high-quality remote sessions with real-time direction
  • Custom remote recording kits that we can send to voice actors
  • Secure cloud-based systems for file transfer and project management

Post-Production and Mixing

Once the voice recordings are complete, our post-production setup includes:

  • Dedicated mixing suites with calibrated monitoring systems
  • Dolby Atmos capabilities for immersive audio projects
  • Specialized tools for M&E (Music and Effects) separation and reconstruction

This comprehensive technical infrastructure allows us to handle every aspect of the dubbing process in-house, ensuring consistent quality and seamless workflow integration from start to finish.

Continuous Investment

Technology in audio production evolves rapidly, and we maintain a program of continuous investment to ensure our capabilities remain at the cutting edge. This includes regular upgrades to both hardware and software, as well as ongoing training for our technical team.

“The technical side of dubbing is always advancing,” Romnie notes. “What sets Frame and Wave apart is our commitment to staying ahead of these developments, allowing us to offer our clients the highest possible quality and the most efficient production processes.”

This technical excellence, combined with our creative expertise, is what enables us to deliver dubbing that meets the highest international standards.
